Benefits of Living in Newcastle and the Hunter

jyarrum • Dec 09, 2018

Featuring a breathtaking coastline, endless café options, a vibrant arts community, boutique stores, a friendly community and more, Newcastle and The Hunter Valley areplaces many people are proud to call home.

Enjoy the relaxed Newcastle lifestyle

Two hours north of Sydney, Newcastle seems to find the right balance between a city and a relaxed beach town. Nobbys Beach, Newcastle Beach, Bar Beach, Dixon Park Beach, Merewether  Beach and Stockton Beaches are all within 5km of the city centre, giving people the perfect opportunity to soak up some sun, sink their feet into the sand and enjoy the wonderful views in between the hustle of the CBD. For those chasing adventure, there’s also the option of whale watching (in the right seasons), 4WDing along the sand dunes, mountain bike and hiking trails and more.

As Australia’s seventh largest city, Newcastle offers all the benefits and amenities of a large city but with all the friendliness of a regional town.

Wine and Dine in the Hunter Valley

In addition to the beaches and engaged community, Newcastle is home to the famous wine region in the Hunter Valley. Known for the various vineyards, the Hunter Valley  is a lush landscape with a range of dining and entertainment options. Enjoy a day at Hunter Valley Gardens, get up close to meerkats, majestic lions and exotic animals at Hunter Valley Zoo, relax at a day spa, indulge in high tea, wander around markets, or enjoy outdoor entertainment with live music at Hope Estate or Bimbadgen. Past concerts include Fleetwood Mac, Bruce Springsteen, Midnight Oil and Rolling Stones.

Free activities for the whole family

While there are plenty of venues, cafes and events happening in Newcastle and the Hunter, there are also great options for free activities, including:

  • Glenrock Reserve
  • Blackbutt Reserve
  • Local Libraries
  • Newcastle Art Gallery
  • Lake Macquarie Art Gallery
  • Maitland Art Gallery
  • Newcastle Museum
  • Speers Point Variety Park
  • Nobbys Lighthouse open Sundays 10am-4pm
  • ANZAC Memorial Walk and Bathers Way
  • Lambton Park
  • Ride the Wickham to Carrington Boardwalk
  • Ride/skate/walk the Fernleigh Track
  • Self-guided heritage walking tours (find the information, including maps and audio here )

With the strong surf culture, Novocastrians are (usually) relaxed and not in a rush, it’s a great place for an outdoor lifestyle. There’s a strong connection to the music and arts  culture with events all year round promoting local artists and businesses and engaging the community.  Newcastle and the Hunter is also very food-focused. With new restaurants, cafes and bars popping up, there’s always new and exciting places to meet friends and family and enjoy a meal or a drink.
